Etsy Focus – Hunted and Stuffed

I love a bit of upcycling and so I’m really excited to introduce you to Hunted and Stuffed.

This great little etsy shop by artist Ellie Laycock is filled with quirky and colourful cushions made from a variety of vintage fabrics – handmade silk scarves and upcycled tea towels, as well as unique retro and vintage homewares.

Ellie particularly focusses on using souvenir and commemorative textiles from events such as World Fairs, the Festival of Britain, Royal Jubilees and Coronations from the 20th century.

She has a great eye for a good vintage find ….

This is an absolutely stunning and very large cushion cover upcycled from a signed vintage silk Oscar De La Renta designer scarf featuring a Japanese Kabuki actor.

I got in touch with Ellie and asked her a few quick questions to get to know the lady behind the vintage textiles ….

Where did you get the idea for Hunted and Stuffed?

I got the idea for Hunted and Stuffed when I found myself looking after a 5 month old and not having a creative outlet, which was driving me crazy. I made some cushions for myself which friends saw and then wanted too and it just grew from there. This time last year I set up shop on Etsy and just last month I won the Brand Amplifier award for female entrepreneurs in Lambeth (London,UK) for Best Business Vision!

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by finding treasure amongst the trash and giving old things a new lease of life. I originally trained as a sculptor so I love the possibility of an old unloved object being transformed into something new.

What’s next for Hunted and Stuffed?

Next on the agenda is getting my cushions into department stores. I’ve just launched a new online shop on CultureLabel.com and I’m writing a book on upcycling which I hope to get published next year.

And can you describe your home and interior style in one sentence?

My home and interiors style is quite eclectic; I like mixing upcycled and repurposed vintage with a bit of world travel and a dash of bling!

Thanks Ellie!

Ellie takes commissions and is happy to create a cushion out of your favourite vintage scarf or other fabric. She writes a blog to accompany her growing business – check out http://huntedandstuffed.blogspot.com/

  2. I have now spoken to Ellie and asked her to change the ODLR cushion slightly for me. She is very lovely. It’s off the market people. It’s mine. I am happy.

Now, have been thinking. You should definitely become a personal shopper for private people and shops. You’d be amazing at it.

Now stop showing brilliant stuff. I’m going to have to take out another mortgage…:)

That’s brilliant to hear Tina! I’m so pleased you were able to get something near bespoke.

Thanks – it’s definitely something I’m considering. Will have to do some research into how others have gone about doing something similar.

Hehe – I can’t help it, i’ll have to only post things I think you in particular would find hideous! :D

  4. Sophie, what a great find. I love the cushios you picked out.

Many years ago there was a shop in London who had the most fantastic cushions made out of vintage scarfs and I bought lots. Unfortunately they closed down and I have not found a replacement since.

I might have just found it.

Lovely to see you yesterday. Thank you so much for the present which I love. Hope you’re enjoying your short stay in London x
