Etsy Focus – La Pomme

La Pomme – ‘authentic French country vintage items found in the flea markets of France’. This Etsy shop speaks to the country girl in me, the girl who desperately wishes she had a little cottage and wild garden to style up.

Owner, Apol tells us more about the shop:

“I’m Apol Lejano-Massebieau, sewing and vintage-goods hunting in a little village in the south of France.

I’m big on making my work low-impact on the environment. Recycling makes me feel good, and you’ll see a lot of pre-loved fabric in my sewn works.

The vintage items are the result of a passion for thrifting I share with my husband Pierre, who helps run the shop with me.”

Vintage French Radio

Vintage French Radio

I love the rustic charm of these items of a bygone era. The wear-and-tear of the items, knowing they’ve been pre-loved and have their own history, makes me want to treasure them even more.

I love the use of colour in electronics that was trendy in the mid-century decades. You don’t see as many coloured home electronics these days, which I think is a shame. I’d be more than happy to find a place at home for the shabby green radio above.

French Antique Chest

French Antique Chest

What better way to store all your keep-sake letters and photographs than in a gorgeous battered old chest?

Apol says:

“This antique French chest is one of our most breathtaking finds. Made of wood and boar skin leather, it will bring rustic-primitive French country style to your home. Look at all the wonderful details – the way the leather has been nailed to to the piece, the hand-forged iron parts, the texture on the boar’s skin, hair and all. Used by travellers in the 1800s, this is as authentic as it gets. It is more than 100 years old.”

Vintage French Ceramic Tiles

I really like this little set of 4 ceramic tiles with a blue and gray floral motif on white.  Apol suggests they would look great on your wall or tabletop and could be used as coasters, hot plates or even to serve bread or cupcakes.

Antique French Music Sheets

Antique French Music Sheets

“For the lover of France, music, and paper, this pack of 5 antique French music sheets from the early 1900s will be perfect! Bigger than our previous sheets, these are still mounted on cardboard and are from a music school in Aigues Mortes, France. Collect them, or use them for your art or scrapbooking projects. An idea: why not frame the music sheets and hang them on your wall?”

Apol and Pierre also have a blog where they share their newest finds and exciting travels. Pop on over to LaPommeHome.

Be sure to check out my regular Friday column Etsy Focus for more gorgeous etsy shops with a vintage twist. I’ll be back next Friday with another fabulous find!

Etsy Focus – The Vintage Treehouse

This week I am featuring a little etsy shop called The Vintage Treehouse, run by two sisters – Molly Acord and Bonnie Wiltz.

Vintage Spools of Trim

Vintage Spools of Trim

The Vintage Treehouse features a range of vintage items that have been ‘embraced and reclaimed’. The shop is filled with homewares and fashion accessories.

Molly and Bonnie say of their vintage taste:

My sister and I enjoy finding cute items. We tell each other all the time, “Oh, I bet someone will think this is really cute.” We hope you find something!

Vintage Retro Desk Lamp

I love this desk lamp – what a gorgeous design! It features alongside a variety of mid-century decorations, furniture and homewares.

There are vintage suitcases galore in The Vintage Treehouse. This red Tiara case is my personal favourite – it would make a perfect sewing chest or makeup case and really brighten up your dressing table or workspace.

Vintage Owl Wall Hangings

Molly and Bonnie seem to have a bit of a soft spot for owls – The Vintage Treehouse is full of them! From a salt and pepper set, to figurines, to the lovely wall hangings above – owls are everywhere!

Vintage Fabric

Vintage Fabric

This stretchy knit butterfly fabric is very sweet. If you’re a dab-hand with the sewing machine you could whip this up into something special. I’d quite like a few pillow cases in this design.

If you’re looking for handmade fabric items for children, Molly Acord also runs the etsy shop Molly Anne Make.

I’ll be back again next Friday with another Etsy Focus shop.

Pretty Dandy

Over the Christmas period, as well as much partying and eating festive treats, something else quite exciting happened. The online shop Pretty Dandy was finally launched! I say ‘finally’ because I’ve been following it’s owner Becky on twitter for a few months and waiting eagerly while she tweaked the site till it was ready for show. Now it is open for business and I’m happy to be able to share it with you all.

Pretty Dandy is an independent interiors boutique dedicated to finding the best in handmade, new design & vintage homewares. The online store features a variety of products from ranges of handprinted lampshades and contemporary lighting, to handmade cushions in a range of colours and patterns, vintage tea sets, limited edition artist prints, twinkly tea lights, fairly traded bird houses, illustrated tea towels, linen photo albums and lots of lovely cards & stationery. Phew! That is a lot of fab stuff to choose from!

Having a browse over the site you get to learn a little more about what inspired  founder, Becky Morris Knight, to set up Pretty Dandy:

“I decided to set up Pretty Dandy when I realised that the thing I have been most inspired and fulfilled by has been creating my home.  My home is the place that cocoons me, energises me, inspires me and, most importantly, expresses something about who I am and what is important to me. I established Pretty Dandy so that I could be a part of helping other people to create their home.

It can be easy to find the big pieces for your house – a sofa, table, bed etc – but the small details, the colour, life and individuality, is harder to come by.  Pretty Dandy is a place where vintage crockery for a gorgeous afternoon tea sits beside a striking contemporary origami-inspired wall light and a hand-knitted cushion. My interiors style is eclectic, vintage, somewhat obsessive, generous, colourful, and free from rules. I wanted to create a shop which would help other people to create a welcoming, fun home to match their personalities and their style. When I asked friends on twitter, Facebook and in real life, to describe their interiors style the word used most often was “eclectic”. However when I looked around at the high street home offerings many shops carried very similar ranges with very small points of difference. I hope when you look at my range you will find some wonderful pieces, some beautiful details which can help you to create your eclectic home.” Becky Morris Knight – proud new owner of Pretty Dandy!

Becky - Pretty Dandy

The lovely Becky Morris-Knight

Once Pretty Dandy had launched I quickly got in touch with Becky and asked her if she’d mind answering a few questions so I could share with you a bit more ‘behind the scenes’ detail to Pretty Dandy.

Sophie: Happy New Year Becky! How are you doing?

Becky: Great thanks! Hope you are too

Sophie: I love Pretty Dandy, I’m so glad to see such a wonderfully varied product range. May I ask – Have you always had an ‘eclectic’ interiors style?

Becky: No, definitely not. My Mum is a big influence on me, she has kind of crazy opulent taste and is a big fan of everything matching. So it took a fair while for me to break out of that mould and find my own style. I went through a phase of being totally retro and have since matured (I hope) into something that suits me – a mash up of vintage (mainly mid-century), rich jewel tones (I have a teal/mustard obsession), quirky new design and handmade treats.

Sophie: I am a big fan of vintage, particularly mid-century pieces myself. What are your favourite vintage pieces that you own in your  home?

Becky: I did an exercise the other day where I looked around my living room to think about where I purchased everything in it. I think out of the sofa, coffee table, wallpaper, curtains, sideboard and lamp only one of those was new, so this is a pretty hard question for me to answer! I will go with something that I have been looking at every day for three years and have never fallen out of love with… our wallpaper. By the way, the new thing is the curtains, Habitat.

Becky’s fabulous wallpaper!

Sophie: So, what are your favourite items from Pretty Dandy and why? This will probably be a tough one to answer – I’ve liked everything I’ve seen so far!

Becky: Argh, this is definitely a case of Sophie’s Choice! (See what I did there?!)… another tough call given that I chose everything because I would want it in my own home. I hope it’s ok if I sidestep the question slightly and choose something which will always be special to me as it was the very first item I chose when I decided to set up Pretty Dandy – before the business had a name, brand, website or anything. It is this print: http://www.prettydandy.co.uk/shop/this-is-what-happened-at-the-beach-collage-print - which I love because it has a really great pop-art sort of feel to it and rainbow rain is a great idea. The others in this style are also all rather wonderful!

This Is What Happened at the Beach - Collage Print

Sophie: It’s fabulous! I really love the prints too, infact I’ve just purchased this one and I’m really pleased with it. It looks like the boutique is really taking off – how do you hope to progress Pretty Dandy in the coming months?

Becky: My aim is really to let Pretty Dandy grow and develop at its own speed. I hope that by continuing to seek lovely vintage homewares, or handmade treasures, that people will love them as much as I do and buy them to love in their own home, or (reluctantly) give as gifts. There will definitely be more vintage pieces coming on to the site soon, as I have various fifties fancies and mid-century design classics waiting for me to find a moment to upload them. I also hope to add some pieces by small British manufacturers and more kitchenware – one of my passions… I should probably stop there – I could answer this question forever, because as soon as I think of one thing to do another five spring to mind as well!

Wooden Studio Shelf

Wooden Studio Shelf

Sophie: It’s brilliant that you’ve got so many creative ideas for the business, you must have lots of work to do! Is there anyone else working with you on Pretty Dandy?

Becky: Yes and no, while I’m the girl with the dream and passion for interiors my husband is a trusted advisor, my website has been built by a talented guy called Chris Tebbit and my beautiful brand is designed by a very very talented illustrator/designer and all round lovely lady called Angi Fletcher. So, although day to day it is just me, I’m surrounded by a wonderful group of supportive friends and family who are all helping me along the way.

Thanks Becky for taking the time to answer my questions! I have every faith that Pretty Dandy will be on everyone’s lips in 2012.

With a feature on the HeartHomeMag blog already under her belt, Becky’s online store is sure to go from strength to strength over the next few months and I wish her the best of luck.

1920s French Glass Cloches

1920s French Glass Cloches

I wanted to share these 1920s French Glass Cloches by Restoration Hardware with you tonight. I came across the top image via Uncle Beefy of The Bedlam of Beefy on Pinterest.

Although I’m not a big fan of the animal skulls on the wall, I do love glass cloches and the way they have been styled hear with collections of books.

A cloche is a bell jar used to protect and display cherished objects – as described on Restoration Hardware – they have been used to house a variety of objects from rare orchids to antique pocket watches. I like the use of manuscripts and books above – these objects (meant for reading and touching) are held, fixed in time and space as objects of interest. The viewer can no longer interact with them in the same way – now treating them as sculpture, to be admired for their aesthetic values.

Vintage Pressies – Tea Cup Set

In the first of a few overdue posts, I would like to share some of the gorgeous vintage finds that friends and family have gifted me with recently.

Vintage Tea Cup Set

These stunning vintage tea cup sets were given to me by my sister Gabi for Christmas – aren’t they gorgeous? I’m still trying to work out where to display them.

Vintage Tea Cup Set

I love that two of the sets feature mismatching crockery. They each came presented wrapped with a beautiful ribbon and a sample tea bag – a variety of flavours.

Vintage Tea Cup Set

I’d better invite a few friends over for a little tea party to make use of these treasures!

Vintage & Eclectic Finds 2011

I thought, before the year finally comes to a close, i’d share a few of my favourite vintage/eclectic decor and styling images from across the web that I came across in 2011.

There is a huge variety of upcycled items for sale via Etsy and in independent boutiques just now and I’m really looking forward to seeking out new inspiration to blog about in the new year.

Melody Rose Upcycled Vintage

Good day all. I’ve another fabulous artist to introduce. I recently came across the wonderful work of Melanie Roseveare and absolutely had to share it with you. Melanie is a Canadian-born designer and lives in West London where she creates her range of upcycled vintage ceramics – Melody Rose.

Modern Surrealist Upcycled Porcelain Tableware

Modern Surrealist Upcycled Porcelain Tableware

Melanie takes pretty pieces of antique bone china and breathes new life into them by adding new and vintage images then re-firing the china in her kiln. Once forgotten ceramics are transformed into new hip tableware.

Rock N Roll Upcycled Porcelain Tableware

I got in touch with Melanie to find out more about her work and inspirations…

* Melanie I love your work and use of reclaimed materials. When did your love of vintage and antique ceramics begin?

“My dad was a mildly eccentric collector and liked to collect pieces such as Toby jugs and mad majolica plates.  I used to love to play with them when I was really young so I think that’s probably where it all started.”

* And is your home filled with lots of vintage finds now?

“Yes, it is. My favourite piece of furniture is huge old wooden post office ‘pigeon hole’ unit which takes up one whole wall in our living room. It’s filled with ceramics, books, music and wine.”

Urban Nature Upcycled Porcelain Tableware

Urban Nature Upcycled Porcelain Tableware

 * So what inspired you to combine vintage images with antique ceramics?

“I like the juxtaposition of the images I use against the original piece.  I like to draw attention to the beauty of the original pieces, sometimes transforming and changing the context. I love the way something can be completely transformed with just a small intervention.”

Rock N Roll Upcycled Porcelain Tableware - Pin Up

* The images you use on your ceramics are fun and quirky – where do you find them and what makes you choose them?

“I wanted this collection to be fun, tongue in cheek.  I like images that make people smile and laugh or stop in their tracks.  I’m constantly looking at new ideas and I often have friends and family giving me books and images to choose from.  Deciding on having three themes: Rock and Roll, Urban Nature and Modern SurRealist  in the collection helped me stay focused so the images fall within themes.”

* Where would you like to take Melody Rose next? Do you have new designs in the pipeline?

“I am constantly working on new designs and I’m planning on adding to my current collection with new designs this spring.  I’m also working on a limited edition series which will be out this summer.”

That sounds exciting! Lastly Melanie , (just for fun) if you could be anything other than a designer what do you see yourself doing?

“I love my work and it certainly doesn’t feel like a job at all.  The only thing that could budge me would need to involve food…”

Thanks Melanie!

I hope you like Melanie’s work as much as i do! To see the full collection hop on over to Melody Rose.
