Instagram – Finally!

Ok, so last week I finally took the plunge and bought an iphone! Can you believe it’s the first Apple product I’ve ever owned?! I finally feel like I’ve been initiated into the world of great design.

First on the app-download list was Instagram! I’ve been missing out for months while the rest of you have been having lots of fun with your dreamy instant photography. But no more! I am finally in on the action.

Instagram Collage

I thought I’d share with you what I’ve been up to in the last week through Instagrams …

1. This little lost duckling turned up in the bushes outside our office. We soon returned her to her mummy.

2. I went home to see my family for Father’s Day and popped into The Belle Isle – this lovely little display was on an old industrial cart.

3. A quick healthy snack – blueberries from Riverford Organic.

4. Pink Gin and Tonic! Need I say more?!

5. Trying out an Instagram self-portrait.

6. Window display for Liscious Interiors, Oxford.

7. A bunch of pretty summer blooms put together by our lovely gardener at work.

8. A wall of vintage suitcases – also at The Belle Isle.

9. A totally indulgent sunday brunch of fried eggs and beans on toast – yum!

So i’m hooked, and I hope to show you more of my adventures through Instagram soon. If you fancy following me, it’s the same name I use for twitter, facebook, pinterest and flickr – ahiddenblossom.

Title, Name, Occupation ….

When you attend a conference of any kind, it’s always a good idea to have some business cards handy to pass on to people you meet during networking opportunities – it’s not rocket science – it just makes sense.

I, however, in my slightly chaotic mindset, completely forgot to get some designed up in time to have them printed before attending The Hive last weekend. It got to Thursday night, I suddenly realised I was card-less and I began to panic. How will people remember me? How will I make a good impression now? So I got to thinking and decided what better way to show off my interests but to combine upcycling with vintage….

Business Cards

Business Cards

I essentially spent all of that Thursday evening with my craft box out. I took a whole stash of vintage postcards that I’d been hoarding away since art school and hand wrote my contact details on the back of each one. This took hours and left me with a pretty sore wrist afterwards! I printed my mugshot and an image of my blog and added this to the back so everyone would get an idea of what my blog looks like (it’s quite colourful and I didn’t want people to think I was just about old black and white photography).

I was happy with the general idea, but I think the backs of the cards turned out to look like a rather shambolic mess if I’m honest, but I took the cards with me anyway.

It turns out they were a real talking point and several people have said they were amongst their favourite cards from the conference. It’s definitely helped people remember me. The girls from Sister Mag even featured one of the cards in a blog post! Do click through and check it out – Thea did something terribly clever with computer software that allows you to flip the cards over to see both sides.

Lesson learned about breaking the mould and doing something a bit different, although I still think a bit less chaotic in future.

Buzz in Berlin: The Hive Blog Conference 2012 – Part Two

Yesterday I introduced you to some of the wonderful speakers I saw at The Hive in Berlin this past weekend.

Today I thought I’d share with you some more images from the conference and in particular the venue – Betahaus. Betahaus is (as it says in my photo) a coworking space for creatives.

Betahaus Workspace

“We’ve envisioned a space that functions as a combination of a Vienna-style coffee house, a library, a home office, or a university campus. We combine the best aspects of these locations, and use them to slowly build the idea of betahaus.”

Betahaus Chalkboard Menu

“Apart from 4 separate meeting rooms, an large eventspace and our café on the ground floor for relaxed entertainment, we have a coworking space of approximately 1500 square metres.”

On entering the Betahaus building you walk into this bright open Cafè space. A huge black board details all the delightful treats on the menu. We had snacks and lunch taken care of each day and the food was very tasty indeed. It was certainly made to keep us going – lots of carbs!

Betahaus Read & Relax

I really loved this book display in the seating area and took ages to try and get a good photo of it, but the bright light through the windows opposite was pretty harsh.

Betahaus Lunch

Queuing for lunch!

Betahaus Entrance

Betahaus Hidden Studio

The Betahaus building definitely reminded me of art school – lots of creative types hanging out, chatting, and well, erm creating….

There were little hidden corridors and rooms like the one above that I didn’t dare enter but liked peering round or into and wondered what was happening in the depths of the building.

Betahaus Green Wall

Moving through the building we reached a stair case and had to take 4 flights of stairs to reach the conference rooms – we felt fit after the weekend I can tell you! The staircase was painted this incredible green and I really liked the contrast of the black sign lettering against it.

Betahaus Staircase

Betahaus Innovation Space

The Hive presentations were divided between two rooms – the innovation space (above) and the slightly cosier Arena.

Betahaus Building

A last look at the grandiose building from street level before hopping on my bike to head back to the hotel in the Mitte…

Pop back tomorrow and I’ll show you a few of the photographs I took in Fräulein Klein’s photography workshop. Then it’s off for a quick tour of the area our hotel was in, and the hotel itself.

The Hive Berlin Blog Conference

This weekend I’ll hopefully be learning lots of new things about the world of blogging as well as making lots of new blog pals along the way. Yes, today I am on a flight to Berlin to attend The Hive Blog Conference this weekend.

The Hive Blog Conference

The Hive, created by Peggy, Yvonne and Radostina, is a European Blog Conference taking place for the first time May 19-20th 2012 at the Betahaus in Berlin.

“The Hive created a blog conference where design and lifestyle bloggers in all their forms— foodies, photographers, mum bloggers, travelers, fashionistas, interior designers, product placers, adventurers — come together, share ideas and connect.

There will be discussions on how to grow your site, how to fund your site, how to keep your site above the fray. Legal topics as well as how a blog can change your life. You will find keynotes on blogging etiquette and blogging ethics.

Friends will be made. Contact books will be filled.

Writers from big and small blogs get together at The Hive to learn, network, share, support and most of all: get inspired!

We are planning workshops as well as networking breaks so that everybody will leave The Hive blog conference with new ideas, new contacts and a happy feeling.”

The Hive Girls

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be attending. I’ve never been to Berlin before so I’m curious to see if the city will match my expectations. I’m beginning to wish, however, that I had given myself a little longer to explore the city around the conference – 48 hours just won’t be long enough – I’ll have to make sure I make another tip to Berlin again to soak up more of the atmosphere. The experience of attending the conference will be something special!

Euros in hand, I am flying out with Caroline and Ursula, then meeting and sharing accommodation with Tina, Chinyere and Toni. The fabulous Tina has arranged our stay at Amano. I’ll be sure to tell you all about it with photographs next week!

MyDeco Blog – Some exciting news!

I’ve something really exciting to share with you all today. I’ve recently been asked to guest blog for another interior design blog!

Have you come across the mydeco website? If not, I’d like to introduce you to it now. Mydeco is an online boutique where you can browse through a range of unique furniture, home accessories and gifts. You can also use a variety of interactive tools to help design your home. I’ve been asked to become an official mydeco blogger and I’ll be writing once a fortnight.

Daniel Nelson of Atelier Tally and Heart Home Magazine, who is also the Social Media Marketing Manager for mydeco got in touch and asked if i’d like to be one of a small group of bloggers to post for the newly redesigned mydeco blog. Of course I jumped at the chance!

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be asked to post for another website, in fact it’s one of my 2012 goals ticked off.

My first post, which went live today, is timed for Pancake Day – concerning a mydeco product – the mysqueeze – and you can read the post here.

Also, check out this fantastic short film by Mark Tintner, commissioned to advertise the mysqueeze – it puts juicing in a whole new light!

Liebster Blog Award

On Friday I was honoured with a Liebster Blog Award by Heather of Canal Notes - How lovely! I wanted to rush in and thank her and bestow the award on some of my favourite blogs, but I thought I’d wait a few days as it seemed a fitting post for Valentines day. It’s about sharing the love y’all!

Liebster Blog AwardLiebster means favourite or beloved in German, and so the award is given to five of your favourite blogs. The blogs you choose to award should have less than 200 followers, with the idea that you will be showcasing a new blog to your readers and then they pay forward the award (after you tell them about it!) to another five of their favourite ‘small’ blogs. The love goes on and on.

Now this little award has already worked it’s wonders around many of the blogs I read regularly so I have tried to pick ones that I believe have not yet received the accolade. I also only believe them to have less than 200 followers, but I don’t really know. Regardless, they are to me ‘hidden blossom’ and I wish to share them with you today……

Thank you again Heather for allowing me to share the love.

Happy Valentines day friends.

2012 – Goals

2012

Apart from the usual goal to eat more healthily and exercise more often I am not setting myself any major resolutions this year. Instead I have compiled a list of little goals to work towards, things I would like to achieve but without putting a fixed time limit on them, as well as a few projects that I hope to participate in. I also have lots of goals for the blog this year, but will reveal these as the time comes for each. Let’s see how many I get through. Most of all I want to be less stressed out and generally have more fun, and remember to laugh and smile everyday!

*Start my new position at work and try my hardest to do a great job.

*Take part in Blogging Your Way 2.0 in April.

*Run a 10k with my friend Julia.

*Finally get some items in my Etsy shop and kickstart my alternative career.

*Get back into driving lessons and pass my test.

*Learn how to use the sewing machine Joseph bought me for my birthday and start some sewing projects, perhaps try this course.

*Celebrate Joe’s 30th birthday in style.

*Post more vintage finds.

*See more of my friends, near and far.

*Have Hidden Blossom professionally designed.

*Send more letters/packages to friends.

*Complete more styling projects like this one.

*Learn to make more origami animals and objects.

*Meet Holly and Leslie in London alongside some fabulous BYW friends.

*Host a Summer party, with a BBQ on our patio.

*Take more photos and work my way through my photography diploma.

*I have a (no longer) secret aspiration to guest post on another interiors/styling blog or online magazine. I’d love to make this dream come true by the end of the year.

What are your goals and aspirations for 2012?

2011 Achievements & Memories

So here we are then … the end of 2011. This year has moved quickly for me and like every year has seen many ups and downs. It has however, been filled with significant and lasting happy memories. I’ve only been writing this blog for the last few months so I thought I would share the months before Hidden Blossom began, as well as recapping a few of my favourite things since. So … below are a few of my more important events/achievements/experiences from 2011. I hope you enjoy the journey back in time with me.

Singapore New Year

The year began by seeing in 2011 in Singapore. This marked three months down of an amazing four-month trip through Asia. Joseph and I counted our blessings, as well as our hard work, in having gotten that far. This period of travel was a dream come true for me.

Bali

Bali engagement

Our Asia trip ended in beautiful Bali at the end of January. Joseph proposed on a secluded beach.

House Warming

Joseph and I arrived back in the UK and in February we moved into our first flat together. We had a little house-warming to ourselves.

Around this time I started a new job, one which has seen me meeting lots of new people and getting involved in some interesting projects this year.

Maggie's walk

In May, I walked through the night from Henley-on-Thames to Oxford (our route made it around 24miles) in aid of Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Oxford. The walk took us around 11hours with just three half-hour stops. Needless to say I was a bit tired afterwards, but proud of the achievement and the £2000 we collectively raised.

Blog Header

Over the Summer I came to the realisation that I was not being fulfilled creatively in my day job and I really wanted to find an outlet for my creative interests, in particular interiors, styling and my love of thrifting vintage objects. I have been an avid reader of style blogs for the last few years and this year seemed to be the right time to finally start my own – something I’ve been considering since before I went travelling. I am only just starting out but am proud of how the first six months of my blog have progressed. See my first (very basic) post here and my initial header above.

The Summer also saw me purchase my first DSLR camera; I’ve slowly begun to learn how to use it! I also celebrated both my parents 50th birthdays with them.

Blogging Your Way E-Course

In October I participated in the Decor8 Blogging Your Way e-course. It has opened my eyes to the world of blogging. I wrote about it here. As a result of this course I’ve come across some really interesting people, who I look forward to meeting in 2012.

I met Rock n Roll Bride Kat Williams in November, along with a lovely group of blogging students at the very first School of Rock (n Roll Bride). See here for my full post on the event.

New Hair

Also in November, I turned 27 and got a new hair cut. Ok, so getting your hair cut isn’t exactly an achievement but it felt like a big event to me at the time!

Other significant memories from 2011 involve learning more about myself as a personality. I am learning to be ok with the fact that I am an introvert and it takes a lot of energy for me to spend time with other people. I want to work my character to my advantage from now on and not be ashamed by it. I also want other people to understand that introversion is not about being shy or antisocial.

2011 has also seen me begin to post some of my exciting finds; below are my favourite posts from Hidden Blossom in 2011.

  • In September I went to the London Design Festival and wrote about it here.
  • I enjoyed collating some of my favourite retro kitchens in October as well as sharing the work of artist duo James Plumb.
  • Also in October I reviewed the book A Handmade Home by Sania Pell and was blown away by the positive comments I received from fellow BYW students.
  • I got all dressed up for Halloween.
  • I’ve shared some of my favourite vintage finds and Christmas decor inspiration.
  • Also in 2011, I shared a series on Book Artists and began a regular Friday column called Etsy Focus, where each week I share an Etsy shop that I’m particularly fond of, as well as a regular Sunday column called Sunday Brunch, where I share my favourite links and inspirations from across the web.

2011 was packed full of fun. I hope 2012 will be just as exciting, if not more so. I’ll be back again tomorrow with my hopes for the new year before I get stuck into January and new posts on vintage finds and styling experiments.

Have a fabulous New Years Eve my friends! I’m off to a winter BBQ.
