Etsy Focus – Basilicus Jones

I love quirky new uses for everyday items and so when I stumbled across the Etsy store BasilicusJones by David Gobeli, I just had to smile.

Vintage Silver Fork Place Card Holders

Vintage Silver Fork Place Card Holders

This is what David has to say about his store:

“Reclaimed, recycled, spontaneous, elegant, and sometimes a bit rough around the edges is what BasilicusJones strives for, started in 2010 and based on the inspiration of the real BasilicusJones, a Tibetan Terrier that embodies this vision. He had a rough start, ravaged by infection and neglect, only to grow into a thriving, rambunctious dog. Sure, he’s still a bit rough and tumble, but full of life, reclaimed from the disregard of poor ownership, to grow into an inspiration of life. We at BasilicusJones embody this amazing dog to offer you class, style, whimsy, and heartfelt wonder with products to brighten your home. Many products will be offered as one of a kind, just like Basilicus; once found and shaped into beauty, with care and love.”

BasilicusJones features an interesting array of upcycled items from reclaimed materials. I love the shape and design of the quilted glass jar above, cleverly made use of as a pendant light. It would sit suitably in the home of someone with a rustic or slightly industrial taste.

Vintage Silverplate Spoon Wall Hooks

Vintage Silverplate Spoon Wall Hooks

What BasilicusJones achieves best, in my opinion, is transforming beautiful antique and vintage silver cutlery into something new for the home. Forks suddenly become perfect place card holders and bent spoons make delightful hanging implements.

“A great addition to a kitchen or any room that needs a little bit of wonder and whimsy, these wall hooks would be a wonderful place to hang an apron, umbrella, or light coat. The spoons have been hammered flat and hammering on the bowl is shown, adding to each pieces uniqueness.”

Wood Branch Tea Light Candle Holder Set

“A great addition to your fireplace mantle, dining table, or beside a warm bubble bath. These tea light holders are made from reclaimed dead fall wood and not harvested from live trees.”

The Old Cinema

You may remember the other week I made a visit to The Old Cinema and wrote about it here. I’ve just come across this sweet little video highlighting the store and had to share it with you. It really is an Aladdin’s cave of vintage wonders!

Upcycled at The Old Cinema

On Saturday I had a wander around Chiswick and visited the Upcycled exhibition at The Old Cinema on Chiswick High Road.

Upcycled Sack Armchair by Kelly Swallow

There were some really fascinating pieces of furniture that featured upcycled elements. I love the above patchwork chair by Kelly Swallow. Kelly’s work featured varying fabrics from the subtle natural tones of the seating above, to quite elaborate brightly coloured textiles. She chooses an eclectic mix of vintage and designer fabrics.

Upcycled Sideboard by Lucy Turner

I completely fell in love with the work by Lucy Turner. Lucy specialises in  customizing and transforming mid-century furniture with the clever use of laser cut Formica laminate, which she applies on the surface. She chooses playful shapes for the cut-outs, producing quite a retro feel.

Upcycled Mesh by Ines Cole

The exhibition also featured items by collective team Ines Cole. The wire mesh above has been transformed into a display backdrop for hanging other vintage items.

Upcycled Tube Map Cushions by Hunted and Stuffed

Above you can see the quirky and fun upcycled tea-towel cushions from Hunted and Stuffed, who I featured in my Etsy Focus post last week. These particular offerings feature the London underground map.

Upcycled Furniture by Lucy Turner

I really enjoyed snooping around The Old Cinema. Along with the upcycled exhibition pieces, the venue sells a wide variety of vintage furniture, decorative arts, jewellery and lighting. They claim to be London’s only department store devoted to selling antique, vintage, retro, industrial and upcycled furniture – sounds like my kind of place! I’ll certainly be stopping by again soon.

Etsy Focus – Hunted and Stuffed

I love a bit of upcycling and so I’m really excited to introduce you to Hunted and Stuffed.

This great little etsy shop by artist Ellie Laycock is filled with quirky and colourful cushions made from a variety of vintage fabrics – handmade silk scarves and upcycled tea towels, as well as unique retro and vintage homewares.

Ellie particularly focusses on using souvenir and commemorative textiles from events such as World Fairs, the Festival of Britain, Royal Jubilees and Coronations from the 20th century.

She has a great eye for a good vintage find ….

I got in touch with Ellie and asked her a few quick questions to get to know the lady behind the vintage textiles ….

Where did you get the idea for Hunted and Stuffed?

I got the idea for Hunted and Stuffed when I found myself looking after a 5 month old and not having a creative outlet, which was driving me crazy. I made some cushions for myself which friends saw and then wanted too and it just grew from there. This time last year I set up shop on Etsy and just last month I won the Brand Amplifier award for female entrepreneurs in Lambeth (London,UK) for Best Business Vision!

What inspires you?

I’m inspired by finding treasure amongst the trash and giving old things a new lease of life. I originally trained as a sculptor so I love the possibility of an old unloved object being transformed into something new.

What’s next for Hunted and Stuffed?

Next on the agenda is getting my cushions into department stores. I’ve just launched a new online shop on CultureLabel.com and I’m writing a book on upcycling which I hope to get published next year.

And can you describe your home and interior style in one sentence?

My home and interiors style is quite eclectic; I like mixing upcycled and repurposed vintage with a bit of world travel and a dash of bling!

Thanks Ellie!

Ellie takes commissions and is happy to create a cushion out of your favourite vintage scarf or other fabric. She writes a blog to accompany her growing business – check out http://huntedandstuffed.blogspot.com/

Etsy Focus – Flea Market Rx

My Etsy focus this week is on the quirky studio collective from Santa Barbara, California – Flea Market Rx – ‘Vintage inspired handcrafted rustic modern furniture, lighting and decor.’

Repurposed Tiffany Blue Colander Pendant

Repurposed Tiffany Blue Colander Pendant

The shop features the work of artisan Hilary Nagler & fine art photographer Robert Redfield. When I stumbled across this online store, only Hilary’s items were available, but I thought they were so unique and interesting that the shop deserved a post regardless.

Hilary works with whatever medium inspires her – reimagining antique lamp parts into modern rustic fixtures, reclaimed plumbing pipe and wood planks become elegant dining tables.

Vintage Industrial Wire Bulb Cage

Currently available are these fabulous lamps, created from a variety of materials including a set of upcycled colourful colanders.

Repurposed White Colander Pendant

“Sweet & whimsical, with just a dash of elegance, our handcrafted repurposed enamel kitchen colander pendant lights are the perfect finish for over your breakfast bar or to brighten up a dull pantry!”

Vintage Industrial Rustic Modern Brioche

Although somewhat industrial, I think the lamps would work in a variety of interior and exterior settings. Hilary says of her below creation:

“The classic industrial wire bulb cage trouble light reimagined …

Vintage Lamp Parts + Rusty Wire Bulb Cage + Old Spring
= Industrial rustic modern aesthetic bliss

Unearthing vintage items from long forgotten dusty bins is only part of the fun. The real joy comes from the organic creative process of joining seemingly disparate elements to create something entirely new.”
